Time passed, as it did. Slow, annoying. Vin was positive that he'd memorized every possible position of the clock hands on the wall. In further fact, he was on the verge of deciding that he was going to have to buy a new clock, just so he could stop with the fucking Pavlovian response every time the minute hand clicked over the twelve. Two days ago, Roux had finally cut the full-leg cast and replaced it with one that let Vin bend his knee, and if that wasn't a fucking blessing, Vin didn't know what was. Of course, he wasn't much of a churchgoer, but he didn't think God would mind the appreciation.
Added bonus points: the cast on his wrist was off, too, and he'd regained quite a bit of his independence. He could get up from a chair and hobble to the bathroom without needing assistance, and for that he was particularly relieved.
"I am losing my mind," he announced to the room at large.
Mila and Lisa, heads close together, looked up at him, startled. For reasons completely beyond his comprehension, they were both laying on the floor, bent over the same tablet, watching a movie on streaming video, and sharing one pair of headphones between them. It had to be a girl thing, because why the hell wouldn't they use the full sized, fifty-inch flat screen on the wall?
"Think that's a done deal, brother-mine," Mila said. She bent her knees up and kicked her feet a few times before crossing her legs at the ankle. She was wearing offensively purple toenail polish and the tiny tattoo she had on the top of her foot â a flower, and as far as Vin knew, their stepmom had not yet seen it â was prominently displayed by her position.
"I wasn't talking to you," Vin said.
"Who were you talking to, then? 'Cause, like, there's no one else here." Mila was obviously practicing her debutante ingenuousness, because butter wouldn't have melted in that mouth of hers.
"Myself," Vin said. He crossed his arms over his chest. "I am the only person in the room worth talking to."
Lisa snorted. "That a fact?"
Whether it was or not was going to have to wait. Lisa's cell rang a few times, shrilly. She fumbled it out of her pocket, checked the number on the touch screen, shrugged, and unlocked the device.
"Yo."
Mila punched the pause button on the tablet, rolled over and stared at the ceiling. "I am never gonna get to watch all of season three this way," she complained.
"... Oh. Hi." Lisa's face paled, even under the normal layer of concealer she wore. The blusher stood out on her cheeks like miniature traffic lights. "How did you get this number?"
Vin perked up, twisting on the sofa, not even bothering with the residual ache in his knee as he squirmed. There weren't many people who had Lisa's new cell number; her attorney hadn't even had to recommend it. Lisa had no desire to talk to her parents or any of her old school friends â most of whom wouldn't have called anyway.
